Run the math honestly. A $30 strand you refused to replace can easily cost you $200 in service labor and a renewal you'll never get back. That's the whole argument. The strand isn't the asset — the uninterrupted magic is the asset. If a strand introduces any meaningful risk of going dark in December, it doesn't belong on a customer's roof, regardless of what it cost you.

Most contractors throw strands away because they never actually diagnosed them. They plugged one in, saw a dark section, and assumed the whole run was junk. That's expensive guessing. Here's the sequence I run on every questionable strand at the bench:

  1. Plug it in on a clean circuit. Not the homeowner's outlet, not an extension cord that's been dragged through a puddle. A known-good bench outlet with a portable GFCI adapter inline.
  2. Look for a dark section vs. a dark strand. This is the whole diagnosis. A dark section on a C9 LED run is almost always a socket or a wiring issue at the start of that section — not a fuse. A completely dark strand is a plug, a cord, or the circuit.
  3. Pull and reseat the first bulb of the dark section. Nine times out of ten on a C9 run, this is your culprit. A bulb that backed out during takedown or a socket that got crushed in a tote.
  4. Run the wire through your hands, end to end. Eyes closed if you have to. You're feeling for nicks, cracks, flat spots where a ladder rested, and any place the jacket has gone stiff. This is the test that decides replace vs. repair more than any other.
  5. Check the draw. Clamp meter or a Kill A Watt — either works. A C9 LED bulb draws about 0.9 watts, so 100 bulbs is roughly 90 watts, under 1 amp. If a strand is pulling way more than it should, something is wrong inside it and you're not going to fix that at a bench.

One myth worth killing right now: fuses. In pro-grade C9 LED runs, fuses rarely blow. If a section of your C9 run is out, stop telling yourself it's a fuse and go look at the socket. Almost every strand I retire early was killed by something preventable. In order of how often I see it:

  1. Bad storage. Figure-eight wrapping puts a hard kink in the same spot every year. Circle wrap instead — it lets the wire relax. Everything for one house stays together in one tote, numbered by county, with zip tie labels on every strand.
  2. Ladder damage. A rail resting on a run flattens the jacket. Ladder standoff is mandatory, every time, and not just to protect the siding.
  3. Water at the connections. Sockets get oriented downward, connections get elevated off the ground, and you never, ever tape or seal a connection. Tape traps water — it doesn't keep it out. That trapped water is what corrodes the strand from the inside and what trips the GFCI.
  4. Getting yanked at takedown. Clips and bulbs stay on the strands at takedown. Pulling a run to get it free is how you crack a socket you won't discover until July.
  5. Cheap wire in the first place. SPT-1 and SPT-2 are typically both 18-gauge with the same amperage — 10A under 50 feet, 7A on longer runs. SPT-1 is the default for seasonal work. Buying something thinner to save a few dollars costs you strands.

What to Buy When You Do Replace

When a strand fails the test, don't replace it like-for-like out of habit. Replace it with the thing you actually want on every job going forward, because your inventory should be converging toward one standard, not drifting into five.

That means C9 LED for rooflines, peaks, ridges, windows and doors — C7 or C9 only on windows and doors, never mini lights on SPT wire. Twelve-inch or fifteen-inch spacing, never 8" or 9". LED only. For bushes and wrapping, mini light strings at 4" or 6" spacing — never net lights. That's what they're paying for. Every strand decision you make in July is really a decision about whether that moment happens.

So when you're on the phone with a lead, you don't talk about strands. You open with: "Hi, I'm Jason with ChristmasLightsHQ. How can we help you with this amazing, magical Christmas season? We want to make this magical." Then you ask what they're looking for, and you listen. Then: "Have you ever had Christmas lights professionally installed?" If they have, always follow with, "What did you like about the last company, and what didn't you like?" That answer is gold — half the time what they didn't like is exactly this: a strand went dark and nobody came back.

Most leads want to be quoted online, so get them the number fast. Speed to lead is the single biggest factor in win rate — target under an hour, ideally 5 to 20 minutes. Do this the same way every year and it stops being a chore. Every July: open the totes, bench test everything, run the matrix, cut up the failures for zip plugs and sockets, order the replacements, pre-bulb and pre-clip the new stock, and put it all back numbered by county. Budget roughly 10–15% of your strand inventory for replacement annually — if you're replacing far more than that, your storage or takedown process is the real problem, not your strands.
