It is the last week of August. Your best HOA account emails and asks what you can put at the front entrance this year that nobody else in town has. You already light the monument sign, the evergreens, and the gatehouse. There is nothing left to wrap, and the board has budget approved before September.
That is where a mega tree earns its keep: a pole, a ring of strands, and a star standing 20 feet tall where there was no tree at all. I have been installing Christmas lights professionally since 2014, and the 43,000-plus installers in our community keep landing on the same conclusion about these builds. It is the cheapest way to add real height to a property, and the easiest thing on a commercial proposal to say yes to.
What Is a Christmas Mega Tree, Exactly?
A mega tree is a lit cone with no tree inside it. A center pole carries a hub at the top, and strands of professional C9 LED bulbs radiate from that hub down to stakes set in a circle on the ground. From the road, your eye fills in the shape and reads it as an enormous Christmas tree. Skip the pixel-and-show-controller rabbit hole; a static warm white or red-and-green tree reads beautifully from 300 feet and never leaves your crew debugging software in a parking lot in December.
How Do You Size a Mega Tree?
Everything starts with height, and every other number falls out of it.
Set the base diameter at roughly 80% of the tree height. Narrower and the cone looks like a skinny witch's hat; wider and it sags into a circus tent. A 20-foot tree wants a 16-foot base, so a radius of 8 feet from pole to stake ring.
The slant length—how far each strand actually travels from hub to stake—is the square root of the height squared plus the radius squared. On that 20-footer it is 21.5 feet, so you cut strands at 22 feet plus about 3 feet of tie-off slack.
Strand count comes off the base circumference: radius times 6.28, divided by 2 feet of spacing at the ground. Tighter than 2 feet wastes material at that viewing distance, and looser than 3 feet starts to look like a spider.

Those counts assume C9 LED bulbs and stringer at 12-inch spacing, the same spacing you use on roofline. Never drop to 8-inch or 9-inch here; it doubles the bulb count and reads as a blur instead of distinct points of light. What Does a Mega Tree Need for Structure?
The lights are the easy half. Structure is what keeps the tree standing through a December windstorm.
The pole. A 20-foot tree runs on a 2.5-inch to 4-inch schedule 40 steel or aluminum pipe, usually in two sections with an internal sleeve at the joint, or on a telescoping flagpole rated for the height. Past 24 feet, step up the wall thickness. A lit cone is a sail.
The base. A ground sleeve set in concrete is right for an account that repeats: it caps off in January and the pole drops back in next November. Where you cannot pour, use a steel base plate with ballast sized to the pole.
Guy wires. Three guys at 120 degrees, anchored at roughly 70% of the height and tensioned with turnbuckles into auger anchors. Two lets the pole whip; four fights itself every time the wind shifts.
Hub, ring, and tension. Up top, an eyebolt ring or welded collar so every strand hangs on its own connection point. At the ground, one stake per strand in a true circle—swing it with a string tied to the pole base, or you end up with an oval that only reads as a tree from one side of the road. Hang each strand on a spring link with a little slack; a strand pulled guitar-string tight snaps a socket in the first 30 mph gust.
How Do You Build and Raise It Without a Lift?
You never climb a mega tree. The whole build happens flat on the ground and the pole goes up already lit.
- Pick the spot from the road, not the property line. Stand where the guests will see it and check that the monument sign is not in the way.
- Call 811 and look up. Utilities get located before you drive an anchor, and no part of the tree, the guys, or the crew goes within reach of an overhead power line. If the only good spot sits under a line, pick a different spot.
- Set the base and swing the circle. Sleeve or ballast plate first, then stake the ground ring at your radius.
- Pre-bulb, pre-clip, and cut strands at the shop. Cut each run to slant length plus tie-off, bulb it, label it, and bench-test it before it leaves the building. - Assemble the pole on the ground. Sections joined, hub on top, guy collar at 70% height.
- Hang every strand while the pole is down. Fan them across the grass in the direction they will land so nothing crosses on the way up.
- Raise with two people, then guy it out. One walks the pole up, one tails the base. Set the guys loose, then tension evenly until the pole reads plumb from two directions.
- Walk the ring and dress it. Even tension at every stake, sockets pointed down, drip loops at every connection, and no plug sitting on wet ground. Leads get made from SPT-1 zip wire and zip plugs at the length the job needs, the way you would for any custom extension cord build.
How Do You Power a Mega Tree Safely?
A 20-foot tree pulls about 4.1 amps and a 30-footer is at 9.4, more than you want on one seasonal run. Split the ring instead: half the strands on one home run, half on the other, each on its own SPT-1 line, on separate circuits where the property allows. Quarter it on a 30-footer. There is no power injection in a seasonal build—you split the run, the same principle behind our strand limit guide. Everything lands on a GFCI-protected outdoor circuit, and portable GFCI adapters ride on the truck so you are never at the mercy of what the property has. Never tape or seal a connection; tape traps water and creates the exact fault you are trying to prevent. And to be direct: never test or replace a customer's GFCI outlet yourself. Mega Tree or Wrap a Real Tree: Which Should You Sell?
When the property already has a good 30-foot evergreen where the centerpiece belongs, wrapping it is the better sale. When it does not, you build one.

What Should You Charge for a Mega Tree?
Price the light work the way you price any other tree: $30 to $60 per foot of tree height. A 20-foot mega tree is $600 to $1,200 of lighting, same as a 20-foot evergreen. Do not invent a separate rate because the tree is man-made.
The structure is its own line item: pole, base, anchors, guys, hub, stakes, and first-year build labor. That is real money going out the door, and it belongs where the customer can see it instead of buried in a per-foot number that makes your lighting look overpriced.

Take a 30% to 50% deposit and give options on the amount. The deposit secures their install date. It is never money to buy materials—the second you say that, you have told a board you cannot fund your own job.

How Do You Sell a Mega Tree to a Board or a Business Owner?
Nobody has ever bought a pole. What they buy is the moment a family turns off the highway on Christmas Eve, the grandkids in the back seat go quiet, and somebody says look at that. That is what you are selling, and it is magical when you get it right.
So the conversation does not open with hardware. Every call at my company starts the same way: "Hi, I'm Jason with [Company]. How can we help you with this amazing, magical Christmas season? We want to make this magical." Then: "What are you looking for?" Then: "Have you ever had Christmas lights professionally installed?" If they have, ask what they liked about the last company and what they did not.
On a commercial walk, stay beside the decision-maker instead of leading them, and talk about December at the property—the tree lighting event, the photos residents post. Point at the empty island: "A 20-foot tree right there would be incredible. People would drive over just to see it." Count your feet and your radius while you talk.
Then send an AI mock-up of that entrance with the tree lit. Mock-ups move commercial proposals more than any spec sheet, because a board can forward a picture and cannot forward your explanation. You step out to the truck, build the quote, and come back in: "I'd love to come back inside and go over it at the kitchen table with you." Never quote in the driveway. The reset value lives or dies in January. Drop the guys, walk the pole down, and pull the strands off the hub as a labeled set, red tags on the same side every year so the ring goes back up in the same orientation. Bulbs and clips stay on.
