The 4-sentence answer

Magnetic Spools are C9 socket wire on 18-gauge SPT-1 jacket where every socket carries a nickel-plated magnet instead of a bare crimp point. The magnet snaps directly onto any ferrous (magnetic) metal surface — steel gutters, metal roofline edges, fencing, HVAC housing — with no clips, no pre-drilling, and no clip inventory to keep stocked on the truck. Cut to length, slide on plugs, twist in E17 bulbs, then press the line onto the metal and it holds. Available in three spacing/length combinations so you can match spool count to run length before you cut a single foot.

Who this spool is built for

Metal roofline and gutter crews — no clip gun required

Standing seam roofs, metal fascia, and steel gutter edges are exactly where magnetic sockets earn their keep. Press the socket onto the metal and it holds — no clip-and-crimp step, no clip brand to match to the wire, no crew member holding a ladder while someone else fumbles a mounting bracket. On a straight metal roofline this typically runs faster start-to-finish than a clip install of the same length.

Commercial storefronts and fence lines

Chain-link and welded steel fencing, commercial HVAC housing, and metal storefront trim all take the magnet cleanly. 15″ spacing covers more linear footage per spool and reads better at commercial viewing distances; 12″ spacing gives a denser glow line for shorter, closer-viewed runs.

Multi-property contractors who want one less consumable to stock

No clips means no clip SKU to run out of mid-season. Pre-bulb spools at the shop, coil into labeled bins by spacing and length, and load the truck knowing the only variable left on-site is whether the surface is ferrous — which takes five seconds to confirm with a handheld magnet.

What this spool works with

Surfaces
Any ferrous (magnetic) metal — steel gutters, metal roof edges and fascia, steel fencing, HVAC housing, commercial metal trim. Test with a handheld magnet before committing a full run: if it doesn't grab by hand, the socket won't hold either.
Bulbs
Any C9 (E17 intermediate base) bulb — incandescent or LED. Socket base is industry-standard E17, so bulb brand and color temperature are independent of the spool. Shop King Pro Bulbs
Plugs
SPT-1 male and female plugs to match this wire's 18-gauge SPT-1 jacket. Sold separately — don't seat an SPT-2 plug onto SPT-1 wire; the fit is loose and the connection corrodes within a season. Shop SPT-1 plugs
Clips
None needed. The magnetic socket replaces the clip entirely on ferrous surfaces. If part of a run crosses onto non-ferrous trim (vinyl fascia, aluminum gutter guard), finish that section with standard C9 socket wire and a Wedge Tuff Clip instead.
Timers
Any 120V outdoor timer rated for the connected bulb load. The wire passes power transparently; timer compatibility is between the bulb and the timer, not the magnetic socket.
Will NOT work with
Non-ferrous surfaces (aluminum, vinyl, wood, painted fiberglass — magnets won't grip these regardless of paint or coating). C7 bulbs (different base — use C7 socket wire). SPT-2 plugs (jacket mismatch with this SPT-1 wire).

Magnetic Spools vs. standard clip-mounted C9 socket wire

Spec Magnetic Spools (this product) Standard C9 Socket Wire + Clips
Mounting method Nickel-plated magnet, press-on Mechanical clip, snap-on
Compatible surfaces Ferrous metal only Shingles, gutters, tile, stone — any surface with a clip anchor point
Install speed on metal Faster — no clip step Standard clip-and-crimp pace
Consumables to stock Wire + plugs + bulbs only Wire + plugs + bulbs + clips
Hold in high wind Depends on surface condition (rust, heavy paint, or uneven metal reduces grip) Mechanical clip grip, independent of surface material
Best for Metal rooflines, gutters, fencing, commercial trim Shingle roofs, general residential and commercial surfaces

How to install

  1. Confirm the surface is ferrous. Touch a handheld magnet to the roofline, gutter, or fence before you cut wire. If it doesn't grab firmly by hand, the socket magnet won't hold under wind load — switch that section to standard clip-mounted wire instead.
  2. Measure the run and cut to length. Walk the line and pace it out, then cut from the spool with sharp scissors or a wire cutter. Match your spacing choice (12″ or 15″) to the viewing distance — tighter spacing for close-up facades, wider spacing for long commercial runs viewed from the street.
  3. Slide on plugs and cap the end. Use SPT-1 male and female plugs to match this wire's jacket. Seat the plug firmly so the vampire spike makes a clean bite on both conductors, then cap the far end with a knockout female plug in case you extend the run later.
  4. Pre-bulb before you're on the ladder. Twist an E17 C9 bulb into every socket at the shop or on the ground, then coil the finished stringer into a labeled bin. Mid-install bulb swaps on the roof cost far more time than bench swaps.
  5. Press the sockets onto the metal. Starting at the plug end, press each magnetic socket firmly onto the surface and run the line along the roofline, gutter, or fence. No clip gun, no pilot holes — the magnet does the holding.

Certifications and compliance

  • 18-gauge SPT-1 wire — UV-protected jacket rated for both indoor and outdoor seasonal use.
  • 840W / 7A rating — printed on the spool label; do not exceed this load per continuous run.
  • Nickel-plated magnet coating — protects the magnet against rust and corrosion through repeated seasonal exposure and freeze-thaw cycles.
  • E17 intermediate base sockets — industry-standard C9 socket, compatible with third-party E17 bulbs.

Questions contractors actually ask

What surfaces will the magnets actually stick to?

Any ferrous metal — steel gutters, metal roofline edges, steel fencing, HVAC housing, commercial metal trim. They will not hold on aluminum, vinyl, wood, or fiberglass, regardless of paint or coating. Test with a handheld magnet before committing a full run.

Will these hold up in wind?

On clean, unpainted or lightly painted ferrous metal, yes. Heavy paint buildup, surface rust, or an uneven metal edge all reduce magnetic grip and can let a line lift in sustained wind — check the surface by hand first, and consider a supplemental clip on exposed corners or windy sites.

What's the difference between 12″ and 15″ spacing?

12″ spacing puts a bulb every foot — a denser line best for close-up residential facades. 15″ spacing covers more linear footage per spool and reads well at longer commercial viewing distances. Pick based on how far back the run will typically be viewed from.

Do I still need clips with these?

No — the magnetic socket replaces the clip on any ferrous surface. If your run crosses onto a non-ferrous section (vinyl fascia, aluminum trim), finish that stretch with standard socket wire and a clip instead of forcing the magnetic spool onto it.

What bulbs and plugs do I need to buy separately?

Any C9 bulb with an E17 intermediate base — incandescent or LED — and SPT-1 male/female plugs to match this wire's jacket. Neither ships with the spool.
