The 4-sentence answer

The C9 Wedge Tuff Clip is a UV-stabilized polycarbonate clip that snaps to a shingle edge OR a gutter lip with the same SKU — 80%+ of residential roofline installs use this clip. The single-SKU dual-mount is why pro contractors carry boxes of Wedge over single-purpose clips: one clip, two mounting surfaces, half the truck inventory. Install speed is the second reason — the wedge geometry self-aligns on the shingle in under 2 seconds per clip, which is the difference between a 200-clip residential job in 1 hour vs 1.5 hours. Step up to a specialty clip (Parapet for tile/stone caps, Magnetic for steel awnings) only when the substrate disqualifies the Wedge.

Who this clip is built for

High-volume residential roofline runs (50–300 ft)

The volume install. Wedge geometry self-aligns on a standard 3-tab or architectural shingle edge in under 2 seconds. A 200-clip residential roofline installs cleanly in under 90 minutes once the stringer is pre-built. Pre-bulb and pre-clip the stringer at the shop, drop into a labeled garbage can, snap into place on the roof — zero ladder time fighting individual clips.

Mixed-substrate properties (shingle + gutter + facia in one install)

The big-win use case for Wedge over single-purpose clips. A typical residential install runs the main facade on shingle, the side wings on gutter lip, and the front porch on facia. With Wedge, one SKU covers all three surfaces — you don’t swap clip types mid-install, you don’t carry three boxes on the truck, you don’t end up with leftover specialty clips at season’s end.

Apprentice-friendly first clip

The clip new contractors learn on. Parapet clips need the installer to read the tile or stone cap profile and choose the right orientation. Magnetic clips need a steel substrate (and a deflection test before the customer signs the bid). Wedge is the no-decision clip — if the substrate is shingle or gutter, the Wedge works. Day-one crew members are productive within an hour.

What this clip works with

Bulbs
Any C9 (E17 base) LED bulb — Tuff Bulbs C9, Minleon V2 C9, and other E17 LED variants. The clip holds the bulb base; bulb type is independent. Shop C9 bulbs
Wire
C9 SPT-1 (0.030″ jacket) or SPT-2 (0.045″ jacket) socket wire. Both 18 AWG copper. The clip clamps to the wire at the socket, jacket spec is independent. Shop SPT-1 socket wire
Mounting surfaces
Standard 3-tab shingle, architectural shingle, K-style residential gutter, half-round gutter, painted aluminum facia. NOT for: Spanish or concrete tile (use Tuff Tile Clip), parapet stone caps (use Parapet Clip), steel awning substrate (use Tuff Mag).
Install conditions
Outdoor seasonal use. Freeze-thaw stable to −20°F. Polycarbonate construction does NOT go brittle in cold like cheap styrene or PVC clips do.
Will NOT work with
C7 bulbs (E12 base — use C7 Wedge Tuff Clip instead). Bare wire / non-socketed wire. Painted-over gutter where the lip is sealed shut.

How to install

  1. Pre-bulb and pre-clip the stringer at the shop. Roll out the C9 socket wire on a workbench. Twist a bulb into each socket. Snap a Wedge Tuff Clip onto each bulb base. Coil the assembled stringer into a labeled garbage can — one can per house — for transport. This is the 1-hour shop step that converts to a 30-minute install on the roof.
  2. On the roof: snap the wedge onto the shingle edge. Walk the eave with the can of pre-assembled stringer. At each clip, push the Wedge geometry down onto the shingle edge from above — the clip self-aligns and seats by friction in under 2 seconds. For gutter runs, the same clip snaps over the gutter lip the same way. No nails, no staples, no adhesive.
  3. Connect power and walk-test at dusk. Run the male plug to the nearest GFCI outlet via outdoor-rated extension cord. Walk back 30–40 ft from the property at dusk. Confirm the line is straight, every bulb lights, and no clip has popped off (shouldn’t happen with Wedge — the friction fit is permanent until you pull). Mid-roof clip swaps cost 4x the time of pre-mount swaps, so test before you walk away.

Certifications and compliance

  • cETLus mark — The clip is tested as part of the cETLus-listed seasonal lighting system (Intertek file 5019711). Equivalent to UL Listed for code-compliant installations in the US + Canada.
  • UV-stabilized polycarbonate — Not styrene (which yellows + cracks in season-two sun) and not PVC (which goes brittle below freezing). Polycarbonate handles the install / takedown / store / reuse cycle for 5+ seasons.
  • No roof damage warranty — Zero nails, zero staples, zero adhesive. The clip snaps to the shingle edge by friction; no callbacks for shingle repair after takedown.
  • Freeze-thaw rating — Stable to −20°F install conditions. Tested through Minnesota / Wisconsin / North Dakota winter install cycles.

Warranty

Multi-season reuse warranty on C9 Wedge Tuff Clips from Christmas Lights HQ. Covers cracked, broken, or UV-degraded clips returned within 5 seasons of purchase under normal install conditions.

Not covered: clips lost in storage (count your pack at takedown), clips run over by lawn equipment, clips snapped by attempted use on tile or stone (wrong clip type — use Parapet or Tuff Tile instead), animal chew damage.

Questions contractors actually ask

Will the Wedge clip break in cold weather?

No. Polycarbonate stays flexible down to −20°F install conditions. Styrene clips crack below freezing; PVC clips go brittle; polycarbonate doesn’t. We’ve run Wedge installs through Minnesota and Wisconsin winters with no cold-weather failures.

Does the Wedge fit all C9 bulb bases?

Yes — any standard E17 (C9 candelabra intermediate) bulb base. Tuff Bulbs C9, Minleon V2 C9, and other E17 LED variants all clip the same. The Wedge holds the base, not the bulb glass — bulb brand and Kelvin choice are independent.

What shingle thickness range does it fit?

Standard 3-tab and architectural asphalt shingles — the bulk of US residential roofing. The wedge geometry accommodates shingle edges from approximately 1/8″ to 1/4″. For unusual roofing (Spanish tile, concrete tile, slate, stone parapet caps), use Tuff Tile Clip or Parapet Clip instead.

Is it actually reusable across seasons?

Yes — 5+ seasons under normal install conditions. The polycarbonate doesn’t fatigue from the snap-on cycle. Most contractors report 5–7 seasons of reuse before replacement, and the replacement is usually because clips were lost in storage, not because they failed mechanically.

Color options besides clear?

Clear is the standard SKU and the volume order — most installs run clear because clips disappear visually against any roof color. Colored variants (green / brown / black) are not stocked as a standard line; case-quantity custom orders for specific OEM applications can be quoted via the contact page.

How many clips per box?

Two pack sizes. 100/Pack (SKU C9-TUFF CLIP-WEDGE-P) for residential single-property orders. 800/Case (SKU C9-TUFF CLIP-WEDGE-C) for contractor inventory or commercial-scale orders. Most pro contractors keep one 800/Case on the truck plus a backup 100/Pack for unexpected runs.

Can I mount it on stucco?

No — the Wedge needs a shingle edge or gutter lip to bite. For stucco-facade installs, the clip needs to attach to facia trim or fascia board running below the stucco line. If the property has no facia trim, you’re into specialty mounting (Tuff Mag if there’s steel substrate behind, or non-clip adhesive-based mounting if not). Send photos to support and we’ll spec the right approach.

Can I combine Wedge with Magnetic clip on one run?

Yes — in fact this is the standard pattern on properties with mixed substrate. Run Wedge on the shingle/gutter sections (typical for the main facade and roof) and switch to Tuff Mag where the run crosses a steel awning, metal canopy, or similar ferrous substrate. The bulbs and wire are continuous; only the clip type changes per section.
