The 4-sentence answer

The SPT-2 Female Gilbert Plug (no knockout tab) is the dedicated line-end cap for SPT-2 Christmas light stringers. No knockout tab = no chain — this plug terminates the line, no downstream stringer attaches. Slide-on insulation-displacement contact teeth bite through the SPT-2 jacket when the cover snaps. Use this when your run ends at the last bulb (no chain to next stringer); use the knockout-tab variant when chaining.

Why the SPT-2 Female Plug (no knockout) earns its place on the contractor truck

The SPT-2 Female Gilbert Zip Plug is the contractor-grade end plug for building custom Christmas light strings and extension cords on SPT-2 zip cord wire. This version comes without a knockout tab — for installs where you don't need the optional pass-through and want the cleaner, lower-profile finish. Cold-weather-rated prongs, polarized 2-prong design, and the kind of construction that holds up across multiple seasons of pro install conditions.

Built for the Job

No knockout tab. This SKU is the streamlined version of the Gilbert zip plug — no removable knockout, no extra port. Cleaner profile, simpler assembly, and the right pick when you only need a terminating end plug rather than a pass-through. For installs requiring a pass-through, order the knockout tab version.

Fits all standard SPT-2 zip cord wire. Designed specifically for SPT-2 electrical wire — the heavier-gauge wire that's the workhorse for pro Christmas light strings, extension cords, and custom-length runs. Snap-on installation with the wire seated firmly into the plug body.

Cold-weather-rated prongs. Most cheap zip plugs use prongs that bend or splay in cold weather — the failure mode that turns a clean Christmas Eve install into a Boxing Day callback. The Gilbert plug uses prongs engineered to hold their shape in freezing temperatures, so the contact stays solid even after the plug has been outside in 20° weather for a month.

Polarized 2-prong design. Wide-blade polarized configuration ensures a secure, correct-orientation connection between your strands and the power source. Standard pro-install spec for residential and commercial Christmas lighting.

Heavy-duty UV-stabilized plastic. Built to survive sun, rain, ice, snow, and the mechanical stress of being plugged in, unplugged, coiled, stored, and redeployed across multiple seasons. Won't crack in cold weather or get brittle from UV exposure.

Designed for Custom Installs

Build custom-length strings. The female end plug is the terminating connection for any custom string or extension cord you build on SPT-2 zip cord. Cut your wire to the exact length the job calls for, install the female plug on one end, pair with a male plug on the other, and you've got a custom-length cord that doesn't waste material or leave extra wire dangling.

Connect strands end-to-end. Female plugs accept the male plug from the next strand in the run, letting you chain multiple custom strings together for full property coverage.

Indoor and outdoor rated. The same plug handles both interior and exterior installations — interior tree lighting, exterior rooflines, commercial display work, and extension cords for any of the above.

When to Choose the Non-Knockout Version

The knockout tab on Gilbert zip plugs is an optional feature that adds a removable port for pass-through wiring. Most contractors don't need it on every install. The non-knockout version is the right call when:

  • You're building a terminating end plug with no need for pass-through wiring
  • You want a cleaner, lower-profile finish without the extra port
  • You're running standardized installs where the knockout adds complexity you don't use
  • You want to reduce on-site decision-making — pre-assemble strings with non-knockout plugs and skip the "do I need the knockout here" question

For installs requiring pass-through capability, order the SPT-2 Female Gilbert Zip Plug with knockout tab instead.

When to spec the no-knockout female plug

Custom-cut C9 runs that don't chain

When the install run ends at the last bulb and there's no chain to a downstream stringer. The no-knockout plug is the cleaner pick — no exposed tab to fail later.

High-cycle install/takedown stress

Knockout tabs add a mechanical weak point. The no-knockout plug body is a single solid piece — survives repeated install/takedown cycles longer than the knockout variant.

Commercial contracts requiring sealed line-ends

Where a knockout-tab opening could let moisture in over multiple seasons. No-knockout plug is the sealed-cap pick for long-term outdoor commercial installs.

What this plug works with

Wire spec
SPT-2 (0.045″ jacket) ONLY. Never on SPT-1.
Bulb count limit
Per circuit code, stay under 80% of the 8A rating. ~1,800 C9 LED bulbs theoretical per 15A residential circuit; split runs at 500-800 bulbs.
Routing
Last bulb of the run terminates here. No chain to downstream stringer.
Will NOT work with
SPT-1 wire (jacket too thin for SPT-2 teeth), chaining (use knockout-tab variant), 240V circuits.

Female SPT-2 (no knockout) vs (with knockout)

Spec No knockout (this plug) With knockout tab
Chain downstream stringer? No Yes (pop the tab)
Sealed against moisture Yes (solid body) No (tab opening)
High-cycle durability Higher Standard
Cost Lower (simpler part) Higher (knockout feature)
Best for Dedicated line-end cap Chainable line-end (when needed)

How to install the SPT-2 female plug

  1. Cut the SPT-2 wire flush at the line end. Don't strip the jacket. Slide-on plugs use IDC teeth.
  2. Lay the wire into the plug body. Match the wire flat into the plug channel. Hot/neutral polarity established by how the wire sits in the channel.
  3. Snap the cover. Press the cover until you hear the click. The IDC teeth bite through the jacket and lock to the conductor.
  4. Test polarity. Walk the line plugged in. Use an outlet tester at the supply-end male plug to confirm hot/neutral.

Build quality + materials

  • UV-stabilized plug body — survives outdoor seasonal exposure without yellowing or cracking.
  • Insulation-displacement contact teeth — bite through the SPT-2 jacket for a gas-tight connection — no strip-and-crimp required.
  • Solid-body construction — no knockout tab means no mechanical weak point. Higher cycle life than the knockout variant.

Warranty

1-year manufacturer warranty on SPT-2 Female Plug (no knockout) from Christmas Lights HQ. Not covered: cross-matched SPT-1 wire installs, exceeding amperage rating, animal damage, year-round outdoor exposure beyond seasonal use.

Questions contractors actually ask

What's the difference between this plug and the version with a knockout tab?

The knockout tab is an optional removable port that allows for pass-through wiring on the plug. This version doesn't have one — it's the streamlined terminating end plug for installs where pass-through isn't needed. Cleaner profile, simpler assembly. If your install requires pass-through capability, order the knockout tab version instead.

What wire does this plug fit?

Standard SPT-2 zip cord electrical wire — the heavier-gauge wire used for pro Christmas light strings, extension cords, and custom-length runs. Not designed for SPT-1 wire; the gauge difference means SPT-1 won't seat correctly in the plug body.

Is this plug polarized?

Yes. The 2-prong polarized design ensures a secure, correct-orientation connection between your strand and the power source. Standard spec for pro-grade residential and commercial Christmas lighting installations.

Will the prongs bend in cold weather?

No — that's one of the main reasons contractors choose Gilbert plugs over generic zip plugs. The prongs are engineered to hold their shape in freezing temperatures, where cheaper plugs splay or bend and lose electrical contact. Cold-weather prong integrity is the difference between a clean install and a December callback.

Can these plugs be used outdoors?

Yes. Built for indoor and outdoor use with UV-stabilized heavy-duty plastic construction that survives sun, rain, ice, snow, and the mechanical stress of repeat install and takedown across multiple seasons.

How do I install the plug on SPT-2 zip cord?

Slide the SPT-2 wire into the plug body, seat the wire firmly, and snap the plug closed. The prongs pierce the wire's insulation to make the electrical connection. Take your time with the alignment — a clean install on day one means no callbacks for failed connections later in the season.

Are these plugs compatible with male Gilbert plugs?

Yes. Female and male Gilbert plugs are designed as a system — the female accepts the male plug for end-to-end strand connections and power source pairing. Stock both ends to build complete custom runs.

Can I order in case quantities?

Yes. Available in bags for smaller projects and cases for full-season trailer stocking. Contractor pricing applies on qualifying volumes — contact us for a quote on bigger builds.
