The 4-sentence answer

SPT-2 lamp cord extension wire is bulk 18 AWG copper-conductor zip cord with a 0.045″ outdoor-rated jacket. Cut to length, slide on SPT-2 plugs at each end, build custom extension cords or jumper leads for any 120V Christmas light load. SPT-2 spec is the cold-climate outdoor standard — thicker jacket survives freeze-thaw cycles + UV exposure better than SPT-1. Rated for 8 amps (960W at 120V); always stay well under that limit when sizing the run.

Why the SPT-2 lamp cord extension wire earns its place on the contractor truck

Build heavy-duty custom extension cords, jumpers, and lead lines for any Christmas light install with our bulk SPT-2 lamp cord (zip cord). The thicker insulation handles year-round exposure, commercial properties, and high-traffic install areas where standard wire just doesn't hold up. Cut to the exact length you need, crimp on plugs, and skip the mess of mismatched store-bought extension cords forever. Available in three spool sizes and four wire colors so you can match every install scenario.

Why Pros Build with Bulk SPT-2 Zip Cord

Built for the long haul. SPT-2's heavier insulation means your custom extension cords and jumpers survive multiple seasons of takedown and reinstall — and stand up to commercial properties, parking lots, and rough surfaces that chew through standard wire.

Stop overpaying for pre-made extension cords. Buying bulk zip cord and crimping your own plugs costs a fraction of buying pre-assembled extension cords — and the savings add up fast across a season of installs.

Get the exact length, every time. No more 25-foot extension cord coiled on the ground because you only needed 14 feet. Cut to length, crimp, done.

Match the wire to the surface. With four color options, you can hide the wire against any background — a small detail that separates a pro install from a DIY job. It's why thousands of installers in our 40,000+ contractor community keep multiple colors on the truck.

Spool Length Options

Choose the spool size that matches your install volume:

  • 250 ft spool — Right-sized for smaller crews, single-property jobs, or keeping a backup color on the truck without overcommitting.
  • 500 ft spool — The most popular size for active residential installers. Enough wire for a full season of jumpers and custom extensions without taking up too much truck space.
  • 1000 ft spool — Best per-foot value. The right call for high-volume installers, commercial accounts, and crews running multiple jobs per day.

Wire Color Options

All four colors are functionally identical — choose based on where the wire will be visible:

  • Green — Disappears into landscaping, trees, shrubs, wreaths, and garland. The default for any install where the wire will run through foliage.
  • White — Blends into white fascia, soffit, gutters, and trim on light-colored homes.
  • Black — The cleanest option against dark roofing, dark siding, asphalt, and shadowed runs. Also the standard choice for stage and event lighting.
  • Brown — Hides against brick, stone, wood siding, cedar shake, and natural surfaces. Often overlooked, but the right call on a lot of higher-end residential jobs.

Specs

  • 18 AWG, 2-conductor SPT-2 zip cord
  • Rated 8 amps / 960 watts at 120V
  • UL-listed for indoor and outdoor use
  • Heavy-duty insulation — thicker jacket for enhanced abrasion resistance and cold-weather flex
  • Weather-resistant — handles UV, freezing temps, ice, snow, and repeated install/teardown cycles across multiple seasons
  • Splits cleanly for plug installation — the standard zip cord design separates easily for crimping male and female SPT-2 plugs

What Pros Use This For

  • Custom-length heavy-duty extension cords cut to exact distances
  • Jumper wires between roofline runs, peaks, and ridges on commercial properties
  • Power leads from outlets to the start of a stringer
  • Drop wires from soffits to ground-level displays
  • Extending C7 or C9 stringers without bunching excess wire
  • Year-round and multi-season permanent-style installs
  • Stage, event, and high-traffic temporary lighting setups

What You'll Need to Complete the Install

To turn this spool into finished extension cords or jumpers, you'll also need:

  • SPT-2 male plugs (vampire or screw-on)
  • SPT-2 female plugs (vampire or screw-on)
  • An SPT-2 crimping tool (for vampire plugs)

When to spec SPT-2 over SPT-1

Outdoor cold-climate residential extensions

Any extension cord run that lives outside through a full season. SPT-2 jacket resists freeze-thaw and UV better than SPT-1; runs 2-3 seasons longer in northern markets.

Commercial multi-property contracts

Where labor cost to replace failed extension wire mid-season dominates the bid. SPT-2 wire reduces the re-wire callback cycle. Buy in 1000-ft spools and cut to job-specific lengths.

Rough-surface install runs (brick, stone, masonry)

When wire is dragged across rough surfaces during install/takedown. SPT-2 thicker jacket resists abrasion better than SPT-1 — important for runs that wrap around brick chimneys, stone columns, or rough masonry.

What this wire works with

Plugs
SPT-2 male + female slide-on plugs ONLY. Never SPT-1 plugs on SPT-2 wire (jacket too thick for SPT-1 contact teeth). Shop plugs
Loads
Any 120V Christmas light circuit: C9, C7, mini-light strings, garland, wreaths. Stay under 80% of the 8A rating per code.
Install routing
Along eaves, behind downspouts, under landscaping. Stake-clip to ground; bury under mulch for hidden runs.
Will NOT work with
240V circuits (residential or commercial high-voltage). Direct burial (use rated landscape wire instead).

How to build an SPT-2 extension cord

  1. Measure the run. Add 6-8 ft per house corner for slack and turn-radius. Cut wire to length from the spool with sharp wire cutters.
  2. Strip nothing. Don't strip the jacket — SPT-2 slide-on plugs use insulation-displacement contact teeth that bite through the jacket when the plug cover snaps.
  3. Slide on the male plug (supply end). Lay the wire flat into the male plug body. Snap the cover until it clicks. The female (knockout-tab capped) plug goes on the line end.
  4. Test with an outlet tester. Plug into a 3-prong outlet tester. Confirm hot/neutral polarity. Slide-on plugs can install with reversed polarity if you flip the wire — the tester catches it before live deployment.
  5. Stake and route. Use ground stake-clips along the landscape edge. Tuck behind downspouts for the route from outlet to roofline.

Build quality + materials

  • UV-stabilized PVC jacket — survives direct outdoor sun across multiple seasons without yellowing or cracking.
  • 18 AWG copper conductor — meets UL standard for 120V residential Christmas light loads up to 8 amps.
  • Slide-on plug compatible — works with all standard SPT-2 male + female plug variants. Don't cross-match with SPT-1 plugs.

Warranty

1-year manufacturer warranty on bulk SPT-2 wire from Christmas Lights HQ. Covers manufacturing defects and insulation failure in the first season. Not covered: cuts from sharp tools, damage from animal traffic, cross-matched plugs (SPT-1 plugs on SPT-2 wire), year-round outdoor exposure beyond seasonal use.

Questions contractors actually ask

When should I choose SPT-2 over standard zip cord?

Choose SPT-2 when the wire will be exposed for multiple seasons, installed on a commercial property, run across rough surfaces like brick or stone, or used in any application where durability matters more than cost. The thicker insulation costs slightly more per foot but lasts significantly longer in tough conditions.

How much load can I safely run through SPT-2 wire?

SPT-2 is rated for 8 amps (960 watts at 120V). Always calculate your total load — including every bulb, stringer, and accessory on the circuit — and stay well under that limit to leave a safety margin.

Can I use SPT-1 plugs on SPT-2 wire?

No. SPT-2 wire is thicker than SPT-1, so you need plugs specifically designed for SPT-2. Using SPT-1 plugs on SPT-2 wire results in a poor crimp and an unsafe connection. Always match your plugs to your wire gauge.

Can I use this with both C7 and C9 stringers?

Yes. SPT-2 zip cord works for extension cords, jumpers, and power leads on both C7 and C9 systems. Just make sure your plugs are SPT-2 rated to match.

Is this wire safe for outdoor use?

Yes, SPT-2 is UL-listed for outdoor use and built to handle multiple seasons of weather exposure. For permanent year-round architectural lighting, a dedicated permanent lighting system like King Permanent Lighting may be a better fit.

Do I need a special tool to make extension cords?

For vampire-style SPT-2 plugs (the most common), you'll need an SPT-2 crimping tool. SPT-2 plugs are taller than SPT-1 plugs, so you'll need a tool sized specifically for SPT-2 (or a combination tool that handles both). Screw-on plugs don't require a special tool but take longer to install.

What gauge is this wire?

18 AWG, 2-conductor — the standard gauge for SPT-2 zip cord and the right size for the 8-amp rating.
