The 4-sentence answer

The C9 Tuff Mag magnetic clip is a Christmas light clip designed for metal-substrate mounting (steel roof panels, metal gutters, magnetic-receptive trim) where mechanical clips do not grip. Compatible with C9 bulbs (E17 base). A powerful neodymium magnet snaps the clip onto any steel or ferrous-metal surface instantly — no tools, no drilling, no adhesives. Pro-installer pattern: pre-clip the stringer at the ground (clip every socket while the line is laid out), then mount the pre-clipped line section by section — faster than clipping on the roof.

Why the C9 Tuff Mag magnetic clip earns its place on the contractor truck

The C9 Tuff Mag is the fastest install clip in the TuffClips lineup. A powerful neodymium magnet snaps the clip onto any steel or ferrous metal surface instantly — no tools, no fasteners, no adhesive, no damage. Steel gutters, metal fascia, standing seam roofs, commercial steel structures, and metal-accent residential homes. Snap on. Install. Take down. The magnet does the work. Available in C9 only.

Built for the Job

Powerful neodymium magnet. The clip uses a neodymium magnet — the strongest commercially available — sized to hold a fully loaded C9 strand against high winds and heavy ice loads. Grips through paint and light coatings, so factory-finished metal roofing, painted gutters, and powder-coated commercial steel all work without prep.

Designed for top-of-roof mounting. The Tuff Mag positions the clip on top of the roofline rather than hanging off the front edge. This is a significant install advantage — lights mounted on top of a metal roof are far less likely to be pulled down by wind, ice, or branch loads than lights hanging off a fascia or gutter edge. Bulbs face outward at the correct angle for street visibility while the clip stays anchored where it has the most magnetic contact.

Works on any ferrous metal surface. Steel gutters, metal fascia, standing seam metal roofs, corrugated metal, steel beam structures, HVAC housings, commercial steel awnings, and metal-roof residential homes. If a refrigerator magnet sticks to it, the Tuff Mag will hold a C9 strand on it.

Fits all standard C9 socket wire. Works with the E17 base used on every major brand of C9 stringer and bulk socket wire on SPT-1 and SPT-2 line. Drop onto your existing setup — no compatibility guesswork.

Break-resistant UV-stabilized plastic. Same heavy-duty material used across the TuffClips family. The clip body survives the mechanical stress of repeated install and takedown, plus the UV and temperature swings of multi-season outdoor use. The magnet is housed inside the clip body, protected from corrosion and impact.

Designed for Speed

The fastest install in the lineup. No clipping, no sliding, no shingle lifting, no gutter hooking. Hold the clip near the metal surface and it snaps into place. A crew that's used to fighting fasteners on a commercial steel building will install a Tuff Mag run in a fraction of the time of any other clip type.

Zero-damage installation. No drilling, no adhesive, no screws, no holes in the metal. Critical on commercial properties where modifying the structure isn't allowed and on metal roofs where any penetration voids the warranty.

Seconds-fast takedown. End of season, lift the clip off the metal. No residue, no marks, no scraping, no pry bars. The strand comes down as fast as it went up.

Where the Tuff Mag Wins Bids

The Tuff Mag solves install problems that defeat every other clip on the market:

  • Commercial steel buildings — warehouses, retail, office complexes, anywhere the structure is steel and modification isn't an option
  • Standing seam metal roofs — the smooth surface no traditional clip can grip
  • Metal fascia and gutters — steel and aluminum fascia where shingle and gutter clips don't apply
  • Modern residential with metal accents — contemporary homes that mix metal roofing or trim with other materials
  • Mixed-material rooflines — buildings that need a non-standard clip for the steel sections

If you've been turning down commercial bids or losing them to competitors willing to drill into a customer's roof, the Tuff Mag is the clip that lets you say yes.

Why Adhesive and Drilled Clips Lose to Magnets

Adhesive clips fail in cold weather. The bond weakens as temperatures drop, and clips start letting go in late November exactly when the customer's display matters most. Residue is also impossible to clean off metal cleanly.

Drilled clips void warranties. Every penetration in a metal roof or commercial steel structure is a potential leak and a clear warranty violation. Most commercial property managers won't allow it.

Magnets just work. No bond to break, no hole to drill, no warranty to void. Cold weather doesn't weaken magnets — it actually slightly strengthens neodymium magnetic force. The clip is at peak holding power during exactly the conditions when adhesives fail.

Who this clip is built for

Metal-roof commercial installs

Hotels, retail, and commercial buildings with standing-seam or corrugated steel roof panels. Magnetic clips eliminate the drilling step that puncturing penetrations would require.

Retrofit on metal trim and signage

Any metal substrate that holds a magnet. Particularly useful for steel parapet caps, metal gutters, and metal-clad architectural trim where mechanical clips have nothing to grip.

Fast install/takedown commercial contracts

Where labor cost dominates the bid: magnetic install/removal is the fastest in the entire clip lineup. Snap on, snap off, no shingle wear, no gutter inspection.

What this clip works with

Bulbs
C9 (E17 base) — fits any C9 socket wire stringer (SPT-1 or SPT-2 jacket).
Socket wire

How to install

  1. Pre-bulb the stringer at the ground. Mount bulbs into the stringer BEFORE going up the ladder. Walk the line plugged in to test for dead bulbs.
  2. Pre-clip the stringer at the ground. Slide clips onto every socket while the line is laid out. Faster than clipping on the roof.
  3. Snap the magnetic clip to the metal surface. Neodymium magnet snaps the clip onto steel roof panels, metal gutters, or any ferrous-metal substrate.
  4. Verify and stake the supply cord. Confirm the line lights. Route the supply cord to the outlet.

Build quality + materials

  • UV-stabilized polymer — resists yellowing, cold-cracking, and freeze-thaw degradation across multiple seasons.
  • Neodymium magnet — strong hold even on textured or coated steel surfaces.
  • Reusable — multiple seasons with proper takedown. Year-three look matches day-one look as long as the clip is removed from the roof after each season.

Warranty

1-year manufacturer warranty on the C9 Tuff Mag magnetic clip from Christmas Lights HQ. Covers manufacturing defect on first season of use.

Not covered: damage to roof or substrate from improper magnet placement, magnetic interference with electronics, animal damage.

Questions contractors actually ask

What surfaces does the C9 Tuff Mag work on?

Any ferrous metal surface — steel gutters, metal fascia, standing seam metal roofs, corrugated metal, steel beam structures, HVAC housings, commercial steel awnings, and metal-roofed residential homes. The magnet grips through paint and light coatings, so factory-finished surfaces don't need prep. Aluminum is not ferrous, so the magnet won't hold on pure aluminum surfaces — check the specific roofing material before bidding the job.

How strong is the magnet?

The Tuff Mag uses a neodymium magnet — the strongest commercially available — sized to hold a fully loaded C9 strand against high winds and heavy ice loads. Cold weather doesn't weaken the magnet; if anything, neodymium magnetic force slightly strengthens at low temperatures, so the clip is at peak holding power during the season when it matters most.

Will the magnet damage the metal surface?

No. The magnet attaches by magnetic force only — no friction, no scratching, no adhesive residue. Installation and takedown leave the surface exactly as it was found. Critical on commercial properties where any damage to the structure is a billable problem.

Why is the C9 Tuff Mag mounted on top of the roof instead of hanging off the front?

Top-mounted clips are far less likely to be pulled down by wind, ice, or branch loads than clips hanging off a fascia or gutter edge. The Tuff Mag is engineered to position on the top of a metal roofline, which both maximizes magnetic contact with the surface and provides a more secure install profile across the season.

Is the C9 Tuff Mag available for C7 bulbs?

No — the Tuff Mag is available in C9 only. C9 is the dominant choice for the commercial and metal-roof applications where the Tuff Mag is most often used, so the product line is purpose-built for that size.

What does the Tuff Mag fit on the bulb side?

Standard C9 socket wire with the E17 base, on SPT-1 and SPT-2 line. Drop onto your existing C9 stringers or pair with new spools — no compatibility issues.

What is the C9 Tuff Mag made of?

Break-resistant UV-stabilized plastic — the same material used across the TuffClips family — housing a neodymium magnet protected inside the clip body. Built to survive the mechanical stress of repeat install and takedown, UV exposure, and temperature swings across multiple seasons.

Can I order in case quantities?

Yes. Available in bags of 25 for specialty jobs and cases of 500 for commercial inventory. Contractor pricing applies on case quantities — contact us for a quote on larger commercial builds.
